Like so many towns in South Carolina,
Orangeburg is history. Settled by Swiss-German colonists in 1735, its
location on the Edisto River made it an important trading center. The city
was a batle ground several times during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars but
recovered quickly following the latter. You can take a self-guided
walking tour of histyoric downtown (a description of this your can be seen
at
walkingtour). Edisto Memorial Gardens - Home of the South Carolina Festival of Roses (last full weekend in April), about 85 varieties of roses are on display. Of course, there are the azaleas and camellias which start the show each spring all punctuated by century-old oaks and cyprus trees. Open during daylight hours. Santee State
Park - With convenient
access from both the I-26 and I-95 freeways, Santee State Park, 25 miles
east of Orangeburg via US-301, is on the western shore of Lake Marion. The
park includes among its facilities 30 cabins, 174 campsites, 6 picnic
shelters and 2 boat ramps. From I-26 take exit 154-B and follow US-301 to I-95 (exit 97), heading north about 1 mile on I-95. From I-95 take the SC-6 exit (exit #98) toward Elloree. Proceed 1 mile to State Park Road and turn right. Follow this road to the park entrance. Park open daily. Hours in April through October are 8a - 10p; November through March 8a - 6p.
